PURPOSE: To retrieve and extract information accummulated in a data base through the use of a telephone from an optional place by outputting information if information can be outputted through other media when information outputted through the means of speech synthesis is not understood.
CONSTITUTION: Retrieval information which is voice-inputted through a telephone line is voice-recognized, and according to recognized retrieval information, information on addresses and the like are requested for example. The addresses are speech-synthesized and outputted through the telephone line. If the information which is speech-synthesized and outputted is unsatisfactory, it is decided whether retrieval information can be outputted through other media, for example, and if there is image data on a map with respect to the address, for example, the map is transmitted and outputted by a facsimile. Thus, data base can easily be retrieved from the optional place by using nearly telephone.
