PURPOSE: To obtain subject new substance having phospholipase A2 inhibitory activity and useful for preventing and treating chronic renal failure, shock, arthritis, cardiopathy, etc., by culturing WS8242-productive bacteria which belong to Streptomyces followed by taking the cultured product.
CONSTITUTION: This new WS8242 substance, composed of WS8242A and WS8242B substances, can be obtained by culturing WS8242 substance-productive bacteria which belong to Streptomyces [e.g. Streptomyces violaceus niger No.8242 (FERM BP-4241)] followed by taking the cultured product. This WS8242 substance has the following characteristics: colorless in the form of needle crystal, positive in cerium sulfate reaction and iodine vapor reaction, negative in ninhydrin reaction and Molisch reaction, soluble to methanol, ethanol and isopropanol, and insoluble to ethyl acetate, chloroform and water. The WS8242A substance has the following characteristics: melting point is 120-123°C molecular weight is 682, and molecular formula is C39H94N2O7, while the WS8242 substance has the following characteristics: melting point is 119-123°C, molecular weight is 696, and molecular formula is C40H76N2O7. This new WS8242 substance has phospholipase A2 inhibitory activity.
