PURPOSE: To produce a battery which has a long life and in which hydrogen gas generation is suppressed during storage by using zinc particles the entire surfaces of which are coated with thin films composed of a water-soluble organic macromolecular compound containing a specified amount of an ethylenebisdithio carbamate or similar compound.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of zinc particles are coated with thin films with 10∼1,000 thickness which are composed of a water-soluble organic macromolecular compound containing 1∼1.6wt% of a compound represented by the general formula. In the formula, X1∼X5 represent a hydrogen atom, a -CS2H group or a -CS2M group (M is a metallic atom); at least two of X1∼X5 are a -CS2H group or a -CS2M group; R is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing 1∼10 carbon atoms; n is an integer of 0∼30. The water-soluble macromolecular films prevent the surfaces of the zinc particles from directly touching air. Furthermore, the active sites of the zinc particle surfaces are completely blocked by the above compound.
