PURPOSE: To provide a red pigment for filter, consisting of an anthraquinone- type red pigment having a specific substituent at 2-site, useful for liquid crystal TV, color copying machine, etc., and having excellent transmittance, light- resistance, etc.

CONSTITUTION: The objective red pigment of formula III effective for suppressing the transmittance of light of 560-600nm wavelength is produced by stirring 1mol of an anthraquinone derivative of formula I (Hal is Cl or Br; Z is hydroxy or amino) and 1.0-5.0 mol of a thiol of formula HS-R [R is 1-20C alkyl, 1-20C hydroxyalkyl, group of formula II (X is CH2, etc.; Y1 and Y2 are O or S; R1 is 1-20C alkyl or H; n is 0-10), etc.] in the presence of an acid acceptor such as potassium carbonate in a solvent such as hydrocarbon under heating at 50-150°C for 1-20hr.
