Abstract:
PURPOSE:To provide the subject new compound containing a specific recurring unit, having low viscosity and high response capable of forming an element having large area, and useful as polymeric liquid crystal element. CONSTITUTION:The compound of formula I {A is carbon-based polymer main chain; B is polyoxyalkylene or group of formula II [D is group of formula III or formula TV (b and c are 0-20); R is alkyl, phenyl, siloxy, etc.; R' is alkyl or phenyl; a is O-50]}, e.g. the compound having the recurring unit of formula V. The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by freezing and deaerating the monomer of formula VI and the monomer of formula VII in toluene in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator such as azobisisobutyronitrile and polymerizing the monomers. A polymeric liquid crystal composition is produced by compounding the compound of formula I with other polymeric compound. A polymeric liquid crystal element is produced by using the composition.
