To provide a coating composition for forming a liquid crystal layer capable of forming a liquid crystal film without dissolving an oriented film or a stretched film on a base when a liquid crystal material-containing coating liquid used for forming a liquid crystal layer is applied on the base, and obtaining a smooth liquid crystal film without generating uneven coating film on application, and to provide an optical element using the composition.
The coating composition for forming the liquid crystal layer comprises a liquid crystal material and a solvent as principal components, where the solvent comprises components which do not dissolve the base on which the composition for forming the liquid crystal layer is applied or an oriented layer provided on the base, and the content of the solvent in the composition is 60 to 90wt.%.
