To provide a liquid crystalline compound having general properties required for the compound, stability to heat, light and the like, small viscosity, proper optical anisotropy, proper dielectric anisotropy, a wide temperature range of a nematic phase, and excellent compatibility with other liquid crystal compound, especially the liquid crystal compound having the wide temperature range of the nematic phase.

The compound is represented by formula (1) (wherein, for example, Ra and Rb are each independently a 1-20C alkyl group; ring A1is 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; Z1is a single bond or a 1-4C alkylene; Y1is hydrogen or a halogen; Rc is a 1-4C alkyl; and m is 0, 1 or 2, with the proviso that the sum of two or more m's is 0, 1 or 2).
