Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a photo-orienting high molecular composition having such superior photosensitivity as to shorten light irradiation time when a photo- orientation method is applied by providing a specified structure.
SOLUTION: The photoreactive part of a high molecular material used as the material of a liquid crystal aligning layer is formed with a carbon-carbon triple bond. The photo-orienting material increases sensitivity to photo- orientation and the carbon-carbon triple bond is used so as to attain the alignment of liquid crystal molecules using a layer comprising the material. In the high molecular material, the photoreactive part and the high molecular principal chain are combined by an ether or ester bond. The high molecular material has a chemical structure of the formula, wherein P1 is a polysaccharide or polyvinyl alcohol, X, Y and Z are each H, F, Cl, CN, CF3, OCF3 or the like, (k) is 0-1 and (m) is 0-7.
