PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a combustion time of fuel to improve output torque, in a state where knocking does not occur.SOLUTION: A controller of an internal combustion engine is configured to: change ignition timing of fuel in an internal combustion engine 102 in a state where knocking does not occur in the internal combustion engine 102, while causing knock determination means to determine occurrence of knocking in the internal combustion engine 102; determine self-ignition of fuel; when self-ignition occurs, drive the internal combustion engine 102 at ignition timing and fuel dilution rate of the time point; and when the self-ignition does not occur, increase a fuel dilution rate.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
