PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a desired output result through a simple configuration so as to enable output of a rear-surface image corresponding to the output position and output range of a main-surface image.SOLUTION: The CPU 103 of an image forming apparatus 101 determines whether a main surface and a rear surface are different in terms of positional relation between a leading end in a document conveyance direction and an image upper-end of the document in specified scan mode setting (S601) and, based on the result of the determination, the range of reading the rear surface is determined (S608 to S612). The document is conveyed and a main-surface reading process and a rear-surface reading process in which the rear surface is read in the determined reading range and stored in a rear-surface page buffer 502 are performed in parallel (S617 to S626). The effective range of rear-surface image data stored in the rear-surface page buffer 502, read in the determined reading range in the rear-surface reading process performed in parallel with the main-surface reading process is determined on the basis of the result of the determination and an amount of conveyance-direction difference between a document size specified in a scan mode and a detected document size (S627 to S635).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
