Abstract:

To provide a desulfurization method capable of sufficiently removing sulfur components in a fuel to enable the use of a noble metal or copper in a reduced state in the case of using a catalyst for various steps to produce hydrogen for fuel cell and a catalyst for a cathode of a fuel cell and effectively desulfurizing under a low-pressure condition for integrating the desulfurization apparatus in a fuel cell system and provide a fuel cell system using the method.

A sulfur-containing hydrocarbon is desulfurized to a sulfur concentration of ≤0.1 mass ppm by contacting the crude hydrocarbon with (1) a catalyst A obtained by supporting nickel oxide and zinc oxide on a carrier containing ≥50 mass% activated carbon having a surface area of ≥600 m2/g wherein the amount of the nickel oxide and the zinc oxide is 1-49 mass% each based on the catalyst and the sum of the amounts of the nickel oxide and the zinc oxide is 5-50 mass% and then contacting with (2) a catalyst B containing one or more elements selected from nickel, zinc and copper in an amount of ≥20 mass%.
