Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce formation of imperfections on a surface (e.g., formation of dimples) in formation of three-sheet panels made of material that is formed using a superplastic forming process.SOLUTION: An apparatus 100 for forming a panel 110 includes a first face sheet 104, a second face sheet 106, and a core sheet 108 between the first face sheet and the second face sheet. The apparatus may include: a molding tool 116 defining a forming cavity shaped to correspond to the panel; a heating system 186 positioned adjacent to the forming cavity and configured to heat the forming cavity; and a pressurization system 192 configured to pressurize a cavity volume between the molding tool and the panel and pressurize a panel volume between the first face sheet and the second face sheet.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
