Title:
VARIABLE WAVELENGTH SELECTION DEVICE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3242839
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate the manufacture of liquid crystal etalon by eliminating the need for high-level optical axis adjustments and substrate flatness which are used for wavelength multiplex communication.
SOLUTION: The light from a collimator lens 59 has its P wave transmitted through a polarization separating prism 41 to a mirror 43 and its S wave reflected to travel to a mirror 45. The P wave reflected by the mirror 43 is rotated clockwise on the travel direction of the light by 45° through a Faraday element 47, transmitted through the liquid crystal etalon 51 having liquid molecules arrayed slantingly to the same 45° as the angle of the rotation to have wavelength selected, and rotated reversely by 45° through a Faraday element 49 to return to its original state, so that the wave travels straight in the polarization splitting prism 41 and exits to a collimator lens 61. The S wave reflected by the mirror 45, on the other hand, is rotated clockwise on the travel direction of the light by 45° through the Faraday element 49, transmitted through the liquid crystal etalon 51 and has wavelength selected, and rotated reversely by 45° through the Faraday element 47 to return to its original state, so that the wave is reflected by the polarization splitting prism 41 and emitted on the collimator lens 61.
