Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately set a contrast evaluation area even when the position of a subject changes within an image screen with movement of a focus lens caused by phase difference focus control.SOLUTION: An image pickup apparatus includes focus control means 121 that performs phase difference focus control for moving a focus lens included in an imaging optical system on the basis of the amount of defocus of the imaging optical system obtained for a subject in a phase difference detection area of an image screen, and then performs contrast focus control for moving the focus lens on the basis of a contrast evaluation value obtained within a contrast evaluation area. When the position of the subject changes within the image screen with the movement of the focus lens caused by the phase difference focus control, the focus control means sets the contrast evaluation area according to the change of the subject position.
