Abstract:

To provide a catalyst free of a risk of contaminating the environment and of a risk of a health hazard thanks to the absence of an oxide of chromium unlike a prior art copper/chromium-oxide, and moreover exhibiting activity, selectivity and durability equal to or higher than those of a prior art copper/chromium-oxide catalyst.

The hydrogenation catalyst comprising copper and calcium silicate as its main components, is characterized in that copper is contained in an amount of 20 to 60 wt.%, and the molar ratio of calcium oxide (CaO) to silicon oxide (SiO2) in calcium silicate is in a range of 0.1 to 0.7.
