To accurately detect characteristics of a recording material in a space-saving manner.SOLUTION: An image formation device that forms an image on a recording material 90 conveyed in a device body, includes: a first abutting member 25 and a second abutting member 21 that are provided opposite to each other so as to sandwich the recording material 90 being conveyed; recording material detection means 20 that is provided for at least one of the first abutting member 25 and the second abutting member 21 and detects characteristics of the recording material 90; and guide surfaces 55, 56 that guide movable directions of the first abutting member 25 and the second abutting member 21 to directions perpendicular to the recording material 90 sandwiched by the first abutting member 25 and the second abutting member 21.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
