PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extract a suitable subject region in accordance with the distribution of color information on a subject.SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus comprises: an acquisition unit for acquiring image data to be processed; a region detection unit for calculating a feature amount represented by the image data and detecting a subject region determined by the feature amount; an evaluation value calculation unit for calculating an evaluation value representing the distribution of color information on the image represented by the image data; and a control unit for, on the basis of the evaluation value calculated by the evaluation value calculation unit, determining a detection method of the subject region by the region detection unit.
