PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow the brightness of a subject to be determined properly even when the D range of the subject is wide.SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus generates a luminance image of an inputted image, calculates a first luminance value on the basis of the luminance value of a pixel selected from the luminance image in connection with the position of a specific subject area in the luminance image, calculates a second luminance value on the basis of the frequency distribution of luminance values within the specific subject area in the luminance image and the first luminance value, and determines a representative luminance value which expresses the brightness of the specific subject area on the basis of the first luminance value and the second luminance value.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
