PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce light quantity unevenness and color sensitivity unevenness when a plurality of light emitting elements different in luminous colors are lighted and a color image is read as a monochromatic image.SOLUTION: An image reader includes: lighting means which includes a plurality of light emitting elements LED-R, LED-G and LED-B having different luminous colors and irradiates a subject with light radiated from the light emitting elements; photoelectric conversion means which converts a subject image in response to reflection light from the subject into a charge image; lighting time setting means which sets arbitrary lighting time on the plurality of light emitting elements; and lighting control means which controls a light emitting state of the plurality of light emitting elements in accordance with the lighting time which is set by the lighting time setting means. The lighting control means controls time when the plurality of light emitting elements do not simultaneously emit light to become shorter upon reading at a monochromatic mode.
