PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens that has a wide viewing angle, a high zoom ratio, and a compact entire lens system, can perform rapid focusing, and has high optical performance over an entire object distance and an entire zoom range.SOLUTION: A zoom lens includes, in order from an object side to an image side, a first lens group having positive refractive power, a second lens group having negative refractive power, and one or more lens groups, and has, as a whole, an intermediate group having positive refractive power, a lens group NF having negative refractive power, and a lens group PL having positive refractive power. A distance between the lens groups adjacent to each other changes during zooming. The intermediate group is, in order from the object side to the image side, composed of a portion group P1 having positive refractive power, a portion group N1 having negative refractive power, and a portion group P2 having positive refractive power. The zoom lens individually sets: a lateral magnification βnw of the portion group N1 when it is focusing at infinity at a wide angle end; and a lateral magnification βlw of an optical system disposed closer to the image side than the portion group N1 when it is focusing at infinity at the wide angle end.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
