Abstract:
A four stroke spark ignition internal combustion engine (10) is capable of operating in a controlled auto-ignition mode. When an engine cylinder is operated in the controlled auto-ignition mode, the exhaust valve is opened 30' during substantially the whole of the exhaust stroke and maintained open for substantially the whole of the intake stroke. While the intake valve is opened 32 during the intake stroke, the charge is admitted into the cylinder in two streams, one stream comprising exhaust gases entering the cylinder from the exhaust system and the other stream comprising a fresh air charge being admitted through the intake system.
