A liquid-crystal display (11) in which normals to a display surface are angled by a given tilt angle with respect to a path taken by external light. Said liquid-crystal display (11) contains the following: a substrate (20) positioned so as to face a light-source unit (12); another substrate (21) positioned so as to face said substrate (20); a liquid-crystal layer (22) sandwiched between said substrates (20 and 21); a triangular prism (40) provided on the former substrate (20); and a triangular prism (41) provided on the latter substrate (21). Light from the light-source unit (12) is refracted by the former prism (40) such that light passing through the liquid-crystal layer (22) is essentially perpendicular to the abovementioned display surface, and light that has passed through the liquid-crystal layer (22) is refracted by the latter prism (41) such that said light is angled by the abovementioned tilt angle with respect to the display surface.
