PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing silicon for a solar cell with high productivity. SOLUTION: This production process comprises: an acid-cleaning refining stage for subjecting granular raw material metallic silicon to acid-cleaning treatment to remove acid-soluble metal impurities such as Fe and Ti; a vacuum refining stage for melting the resulting granular silicon from the acid-cleaning refining stage, under vacuum to remove metal impurities each having a low vapor pressure, such as Mn, by evaporating them; an oxidation refining stage for adding oxygen and/or steam to the resulting molten silicon from the vacuum refining stage, in a gaseous argon atmosphere to oxidize and remove oxidizable impurities such as C and S; and a solidification refining stage for subjecting the resulting molten silicon from the oxidation refining stage, to unidirectional solidification to remove residual impurities such as Fe and Ti; wherein these refining stages except the acid-cleaning refining stage, are successively and continuously performed in such a way that the material to be refined in each of the refining stages (except the acid-cleaning refining stage) is brought into a molten state effected by subjecting the material to skull melting with an induction-heated cold crucible.
