PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing epoxidized cellulose which dissolves cellulose using two kinds of ionic liquids, can easily epoxidize cellulose in a comparatively low temperature region (approximately 60°C), and prevents contamination of salts.SOLUTION: A side-chain hydroxy group of cellulose can be directly epoxidized without producing any harmful by-product, by dissolving cellulose in a mixed ionic liquid where an ionic liquid (first ionic liquid) excellent in cellulose dissolving properties and an acid type ionic liquid (second ionic liquid) excellent in catalyst ability are mixed at a specific ratio, and adding an epoxydizing agent to the ionic liquid and heating the ionic liquid.SELECTED DRAWING: None
