PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing hydroxypropyl cellulose having excellent water solubility while keeping a high reaction selectivity by a convenient method.SOLUTION: A process for producing hydroxypropyl cellulose includes the step of making cellulose react with propylene oxide in the presence of metal hydroxide, water of 1.0 mass% or more and 50 mass% or less relative to the cellulose, and a nonaqueous solvent of 1.0 mass% or more and 100 mass% or less relative to the cellulose.SELECTED DRAWING: None
