PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a slide member and a process of manufacture of the slide member capable of realizing in a stable manner a superior friction reducing action without being influenced by variation in Hertz contact region, without performing a high-precise positional alignment between the sliding surfaces and stably realizing a superior friction reducing action.SOLUTION: A sliding member includes the first member having a sliding surface of convex curved plane and the second member having a sliding surface relatively sliding in respect to the sliding plane of the first member. At a stage for forming a periodical structure, a periodical structure of grating-like irregularity where the salient top point becomes non-flat plane and its height is varied continuously is formed at the sliding plane of the first member. At a stage of mirror surface finishing, the sliding plane of the second member is finished to form a mirror surface with higher surface hardness than that of the sliding plane of the first member. At the wearing stage, the sliding plane of the first member and the sliding plane of the second member are slid to each other under lubricating state and they are worn out with the periodical structure being applied as a sacrifice layer.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
