To provide an alicyclic tetracarboxylic dianhydride which can be used as a starting monomer of a polyimide having a high light transmittance without absorption in the ultraviolet region and having improved processability and excellent solubility in solvents.

The invention relates to 4-oxatetracyclo[5.4.0.02,6.18,11]dodecane-3,5-dione-9-spiro-3'-(tetrahydrofuran-2',5'-dione) represented by formula (1), tricyclo[4.2.1.02,5]nonane compounds represented by formulas (2) and (3) as intermediates thereof, and methods for producing them. In formulas (1), (2) and (3), a carbon-carbon bond including a broken line represents a single or a double bond; and each R1independently represents H or a 1-10 C alkyl.
