Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide drugs for treating hyperbilirubinemia or symptoms thereof in infants.SOLUTION: Disclosed herein is a drug for use in a method for treating hyperbilirubinemia or symptoms thereof in an infant, in which method, a therapeutically effective amount of the drug comprising stannsoporfin, a kind of metalloporphyrin of which metallo moiety is tin, is administered to an infant with hyperbilirubinemia where no exclusion factor is present and at least one of a baseline total bilirubin level is elevated above a predetermined threshold and at least one risk factor is present, the infant's measured total serum bilirubin levels are lower than the level suggested by the 2004AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) nomogram for initiating phototherapy by 1-3 mg/dL, and the dose of the stannsoporfin is 0.75-5 mg/kg based on the body weight of the infant. In some embodiments, the infant is of a gestational age from about 35 to about 43 weeks, and a therapeutic amount of stannsoporfin is administered at a time selected from within about 6 hours, about 12 hours, about 24 hours, and within about 48 hours after the birth.SELECTED DRAWING: None
