To obtain an organic EL (electroluminescent) element that emits phosphorescence, has excellent luminous efficiency, color conversion efficiency, etc., and is suitable for a display, a lighting apparatus, etc.
The organic EL element has an organic thin film layer between a positive electrode and a negative electrode. The organic thin film layer comprises a metal complex-containing polymer that has a metal complex unit having a π electron conjugate part and a π electron conjugate cleavage unit for cleaving the π electron conjugate in the metal complex unit as repeating units. The metal complex-containing polymer is preferably a mode containing repeating units represented by structural formula (1) (A is a π electron conjugate part-containing metal complex unit; B is a π electron conjugate cleavage unit for cleaving the π electron conjugate in the A; x is the mol fraction (mol%) of the A in the whole metal complex-containing polymer; y is the mol fraction (mol%) of the B in the whole metal complex-containing polymer; x+y=100; n is a degree of polymerization).
