A dynamic subscriber line DSL apparatus comprises a distribution point unit, DPU, configured to generate a communication data in the form of data transfer units transmitted as symbols, wherein the DPU is configured to cause the symbols to be transmitted according to discontinuous operation that ceases transmission after all symbols have been sent, wherein the DPU is configured to transmit time keeping control information represented by sync symbols or pilot tones.
