To produce molten metal with high productivity while performing stable operation, in a method of producing molten metal by melting iron-based scrap by using a vertical melting furnace.
In this method of producing molten metal by charging the iron-based scrap and coke from a furnace top of the vertical melting furnace, blowing off hot air from a plurality of tuyeres formed at a furnace lower section, and melting the iron-based scrap by the combustion heat of the coke, oxygen injection nozzles for injecting oxygen at supersonic speed are disposed on at least a part of the tuyeres, and the oxygen is blown out of the oxygen injection nozzle while blowing off hot air from the tuyeres in a state of satisfying 0.68×A+24≤V≤-1.39×A+78 in which A is an oxygen enrichment ratio (vol.%)=([flow rate of oxygen blown off from the oxygen injection nozzle]/[flow rate of hot air])×100, and V is flow velocity (Nm/s) at a central position of the furnace of oxygen blown out of the oxygen injection nozzles.
