Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a coherent light source, which can be operated at room temperature and has the compact configuration, low power consumption and long wavelengths and can generate short pulses, by combining a semiconductor laser and a compound semiconductor quantum well, and using difference- frequency generation.
CONSTITUTION: At least three energy levels c1, lh1 and lh2 are provided. This generator comprises a quantum well, on which an electric field is applied and a quantum thin wire or a quantum case structure. Light ω1 and ω2 corresponding to two transition energies among three transitions are cast in. Thus, coherent light ω3 having the wavelength corresponding to the other one transition energy is generated based on the difference frequency.
