PURPOSE: To provide a printer device wherein surface and back of a predeter mined face of a recording paper can be discriminated, use of erroneous type of recording paper can be prevented, and a thermal head can be controlled dependent on density gradation of a recording paper to be used.
CONSTITUTION: A device comprises a thermal head 1, an ink sheet 3, a recording paper 4 having different glossiness at its recording face and rear face, a glossiness measuring means 8 for measuring the glossiness of the top face of the recording paper 4, and a discriminating means for discriminating the top and rear faces of the recording paper 4 based on glossiness data. The ink sheet 3 coated with a plurality of types of ink and the recording paper 4 of a type corresponding to the type of the ink sheet 3 are prepared in such a manner that the glossiness of the recording face is varied so as to vary the density gradation as a result of recording. The type of the recording paper 4 is discriminated at a comparator 9 of the discriminating means based on glossiness measuring data, and energization pulse of the thermal head 1 is controlled corresponding to the density gradation corresponding to the type of the recording paper 4 by the comparator 9.
