PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pixel drive device and a pixel drive method, suppressing a dark current generated in a photoelectron retention unit.SOLUTION: There is provided a pixel drive device for driving a unit pixel having a photoelectric conversion element that generates photoelectrons according to the quantity of incident light during a light receiving period. The unit pixel includes a plurality of photoelectron distribution units for distributing the photoelectrons generated by the photoelectric conversion element. Each photoelectron distribution unit includes a first transfer unit for transferring a photoelectron converted by the photoelectric conversion element, and a photoelectron retention unit for tentatively retaining the photoelectron transferred from the first transfer unit. When the photoelectron is transferred to the photoelectron retention unit, a gate drive signal voltage having a first voltage value higher than a reference voltage value is applied to the gate of the photoelectron retention unit to which the photoelectron is transferred. Also, when the photoelectron is retained in the photoelectron retention unit without transfer of the photoelectron to the photoelectron retention unit, a gate drive signal voltage having a second voltage value lower than the first voltage value and higher than the reference value is applied to the gate of the photoelectron retention unit.
