PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a predictive biomarker for hypoxia-activated prodrug therapy.SOLUTION: A method for treating cancer in a patient comprises the steps of measuring a CA-IX protein or RNA level in a sample isolated from the patient, and administering a hypoxia-activated prodrug to the patient if the measured level is equal to or greater than a predetermined value, or administering a cancer therapy other than a therapy comprising administration of a hypoxia-activated prodrug if the measured level does not exceed the predetermined value.SELECTED DRAWING: None
