PURPOSE: To provide the driving circuit of the liquid crystal display device which makes a four-gradation display by adding a simple circuit to a controller which does not have a multi-gradational display function used for a conventional dot matrix type liquid crystal display unit that divides the screen into an upper and a lower screen and makes displays.

CONSTITUTION: This device has the dot matrix type liquid crystal display unit 1, a controller 9 which generates display data UD for the upper screen and display data UD for the lower screen when the liquid crystal display unit 1 is divided into the upper and lower screens and does not have the multi- functional display function, and a gradational display signal generating means 7 which selects 1st 3rd or 4th gradation signals by using the upper screen display data UD and lower screen display data LD and generates a gradational display signal Y asynchronous with an AC-converted signal FR to the liquid crystal display unit 1; and the controller 9 performs control to make a four-gradation display on the liquid crystall display unit 1 by using the gradational display signal Y.
