To provide a manufacturing method of a solid high polymer electrolyte membrane simultaneously satisfying productivity and characteristics by a radiation graft-polymerization method, and also to provide a fuel cell using the electrolyte membrane.
In this method of manufacturing the solid high polymer electrolyte membrane by graft-polymerizing a radical reactive monomer to a radical fluorine based resin formed by irradiating radiations, the graft-polymerization is carried out in the atmosphere of oxygen concentration of 0.05 volume %. In this fuel cell, the solid high polymer electrolyte membrane manufactured by this manufacturing method is provided between a fuel electrode and an air electrode. By using this manufacturing method, a graft material is not gelatinized, and the solid high polymer electrolyte membrane having a high graft ratio can be obtained. Since the solid high polymer electrolyte membrane manufactured by this method shows high ion conductivity, and causes little swelling with methanol, it is suitable for the electrolyte membrane for the fuel cell, the electrolyte membrane for a direct methanol type fuel cell in particular.
