Abstract:
A radial brake assembly 48 is disclosed for selectively preventing rotation of a shaft 24, such as a shaft used in a control rod drive for a nuclear reactor. The brake assembly 48 includes a stationary housing, a rotor disc 56 fixedly connected to the shaft 24 for rotation therewith, and a brake member 72 disposed adjacent to the perimeter 64 of the rotor disc 56. The rotor disc 56 includes at least one rotor tooth 62 and the brake member 72 includes at least one braking tooth 74. The brake member 72 is selectively positioned in a deployed position 72d for allowing the braking tooth 74 to contact the rotor tooth 62 for preventing rotation of the shaft 24 in a first direction, and in a retracted position 72r for allowing the rotor disc 56 and shaft 24 to rotate without restraint from the brake member 72.
