PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent capable of producing an alignment film that offers good adhesion to a substrate.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal aligning agent contains a compound [A] having at least one functional group selected from a group consisting of carbodiimide groups and protected carbodiimide groups obtained by protecting carbodiimide groups. The liquid crystal aligning agent may also contain at least one polymer [P] selected from a group consisting of polyamic acids, polyamic acid esters, polyimides, and polyorganosiloxanes.SELECTED DRAWING: None
