Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an articulated tool positioner which supports pushing and pulling on the cables and provides for simpler assembly.SOLUTION: First coupled guides 30 are positioned between the base member 22 and the intermediate member 24, second coupled guides 36 are positioned between the intermediate member and the end member 26, and third coupled guides 42 are positioned between the end member and the tool holder. The base member, intermediate member, end member, second tool holder, and first, second, and third coupled guides all have a central opening and guide openings or securing points for securing flexible control links to the base member or to another object. Pushing or pulling first control links causes the base member, the first and second coupled guides, the intermediate member, and the end member to define a continuous curve. The second control links cause the end member to maintain an orientation the same as the base member, when other flexible control link are pushed or pulled. Pushing or pulling the third control links causes the tool holder to be moved into any of a plurality of orientations, such that the third coupled guides define a continuous curve between the end member and the tool holder.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
