PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium superior in lubricity performance by using a vapor deposited film layer in which the ratio of region where lubricant molecules are oriented vertically against substrate surface, is ≥20% of the total lubricating layer surface.
CONSTITUTION: A vapor depositing substance 5 is put on a vapor depositing substance holder 4 which has a temp. adjustment function, and temperatures of a substrate 2 and the vapor depositing substance 5 are exactly controlled by a tyemp. control heater 41 and a temp. monitoring thermometer 42. When a temp. difference between the substrate 2 and the vapor depositing substance 5 is ≤30°C, the ratio of the region where the molecules are vertically oriented against the substrate surfaceoccupy, is ≥90%, so that the temperatures of the substrate 2 and the vapor depositing substance 5 are held within ± 2°C for the set value and the operation is performed. The optimum temp. of the substrate 2 is different depending on the kind of a protective layer substance of the substrate surface and the kinf of the vapor depositing substance 5, and the thickness of the protective layer is normally 10-100, preferably 20-50.
