PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a viscosity index improver having high viscosity-index improvement effect and being excellent in shear stability of a lubricant composition.SOLUTION: A viscosity index improver comprises copolymer (A) that comprises monomer (a) represented by general formula (1) and (meth)acrylic acid alkyl ester (b) with an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms as essential constituent monomers. A weight average molecular weight of (A) is 20,000-150,000 and a number average molecular weight of monomer (a) is 1,000-4,000.SELECTED DRAWING: None
