To provide a water-based coating material composition for the outer surface of a can which having excellent following capability (sliding characteristic) of the can when the coated can is transported at a high speed, excellent scratch resistance and having a wax composition hardly causes wax contamination in a transporting line or a retort treatment.

The water-based coating material composition for the outer surface of the can comprises: a water soluble acrylic resin (A) prepared by copolymerizing an ethylenic unsaturated monomer containing 35-50 wt.% N-alkoxy methyl (meth)acryl amide and a carboxyl group-containing ethylenic unsaturated monomer in the presence of animal wax (a) having 40-70°C melting point; a water-based wax dispersion (B) comprising the animal wax (a) and an acid component-containing synthetic wax (b) having 90-120°C melting point in the ratio (a)/(b) of (70/30)-(95/5); a water soluble polyester resin (C); and an amine resin (D), wherein the content of the animal wax (a) is 0.6-2.0 wt.% in the water-based coating material composition solid portion.
