ACCESSORY RETAINER FOR A CAN
Technical Field
[0001] Present invention relates to an accessory retainer, which is fastened at the end of a pressure can, such as at the end of a pressure can for assembly foam, which enables accessories, such as protective gloves, manual, nozzles, etc. to be supplied with the can.
[0002] In the context of the present invention the term "can" means primarily an aerosol can or a pressure can containing a product under pressure, such as polyurethane foam (Makroflex™, Penosil™, etc.) or other similar product.
[0003] At the end of such a can there is usually an output valve for delivering the product. Depending on the type of the output valve or the nozzle at the end of the can, the product is delivered either with a hand applicator supplied with the can (i.e. a plastic tube with a special end piece) or with a special foam gun, which is screwed onto the end of the can. At the other end of the can there is the bottom of the can.
Background Art
[0004] Previously accessories supplied with the can (i.e. a fine plastic tube to be inserted into the corresponding orifice of the output valve) have been sellotaped onto the outer surface of the can or onto the outer side of the end cap of the can, where on the end cap there is an additional
suspension opening or other fastening means for that purpose.
[0005] In case flexible accessories, such as protective gloves to protect user's hands (i.e. rubber gloves, preferably thin plastic gloves made of PVC), must be supplied with the can, it is not practical to fasten them onto the surface of the can or onto the end cap of said can, because accessories can become detached and get lost on the filling or on the packaging line of the cans or during transportation of the cans. It may also happen, that a passer-by may take said accessories fastened to the surface of the can or its end cap from the shelf in the store.
[0006] An extra operation is required to be performed on the production line to fasten said accessories onto the surface of the can, which also requires additional equipment. Furthermore the accessories fastened to the surface of the can or of its end cap hinder packaging and transportation of cans on the production line.
Disclosure of Invention
[0007] The object of the present invention is an accessory retainer to be fastened to the end of the can and intended to hold accessories such as protective gloves (or a package of gloves), manual, nozzles, etc. to be supplied with the can.
[0008] The accessory retainer of the invention comprises mainly two halves which are hinged together with an articulated joint. One of the halves is intended to be fastened by its outer (lower) side to the endpiece at the end of the can. The other half is turnable around the articulated joint connecting said two halves onto the first half, one above the other.
[0009] In a position where one half is turned onto the other half, a holding space is formed for accessories between the opposite facing sides of the halves.
[0010] To fasten the retainer onto the endpiece at the end of the can, an annular protrusion is formed to the outer side of one of the halves.
[001 1] In the first embodiment of the annular protrusion the latter is formed as a male part, i.e. the endpiece at the end of the can grips around said annular protrusion, in other words the annular protrusion is inserted into the orifice or into the step in the endpiece.
[0012] In the second embodiment of the annular protrusion the latter is formed as a female part, i.e. the annular protrusion grips around the endpiece at the end of the can, in other words the endpiece of the can or the step on said endpiece is inserted into the annular protrusion.
[0013] Preferably the annular protrusion on the outer side of one of the halves is positioned symmetrically in relation to the edges of said half, in other words the annular protrusion is located on the outer side of one half, in the centre of said side or at the equal distances from the opposite edges of said half.
[0014] However the annular protrusion on the outer side of one of the halves can also be placed so that said annular protrusion is closer to one edge of the two opposite edges. In other words said annular protrusion is placed onto the outer side of the half so that it is closer to one edge than to the other.
[0015] The opposite edges of the retainer edges, comprising a joint connecting the two halves of the retainer, are provided with fixing means to fasten the two halves of the retainer in a position, where said halves are placed one on the other. These fixing means include for example a projection on the edge of one of the halves and the corresponding depression on the edge of the other half, whereas said projection is located in said depression, when the two halves are positioned one on the other.
[0016] One of the halves comprises along its perimeter a flange and the other half comprises along its perimeter a flange with a step.
[0017] In a position, where one half is turned on the other, the flange of one of the halves is positioned on the step of the flange of the other half so, that the holding space formed between said two halves is delimited by two opposite sides of said halves and by at least one of said flanges.
[0018] Preferably in the second embodiment of said retainer between the edges of the two retainer halves connected by a joint, a suspension opening is formed to fasten an accessory outside the holding space which is formed when said two halves are positioned one on the other. Said suspension opening is intended to suspend for example a hand applicator to the retainer. The hand applicator is an item separate from the retainer.
[0019] The suspension opening formed into the opposite edges of the retainer in its closed state can constitute a recess only in one edge of the retainer half or recesses in the opposite edges of the halves, which together form a suspension opening. An accessory such as a hand applicator is
suspended from said suspension opening by inserting the suspension end of the applicator into the holding space so that the remaining portion of the applicator remains outside the holding space. Since the suspension opening and suspension end are configured so that the suspension end does not go through the suspension opening, the hand applicator can be removed from the retainer only in an open position of said retainer when its halves are turned around the hinge joint open and away from each other.
[0020] An accessory retainer of the invention is preferably made of plastic material, such as polyethylene (PE) or of some other suitable plastic material. Preferably the retainer is made as an integral component by injection molding of plastic material, whereas the articulated joint between said two halves comprises only a thin-walled plastic strip, which connects said two halves of the retainer and is in integrity with said halves.
[0021] Naturally the halves of said retainer can be made as two separate
components, which are connected to form an articulated joint (hinge) so, that one half of the retainer can turn relative to the other half of the retainer around said joint.
[0022] Accessories, such as protective gloves, can be placed in the holding
space either wrapped in a plastic film or unprepacked.

Mode(s) for Carrying Out the Invention
[0024] On Figure 1 the first embodiment of an accessory retainer 1 of the
invention is depicted, where said retainer is placed at the end of the can 2, specifically on the endpiece 3 at the end of the can 2. The first
embodiment of the retainer 1 is depicted on Figures 1 to 13.
[0025] The second embodiment of the retainer 1 is depicted on Figures 15 to 31.
[0026] Both embodiments of the retainer 1 comprise mainly two halves 4 and 5, which are connected together by a joint 6, whereat one half 4 is intended to be fastened by its lower side to the endpiece 3 at the end of the can 2.
[0027] The other half 5 of the retainer 1 is turnable around the joint 6 connecting said two halves on top of the first half 4.
[0028] When the first half 4 is turned on top of the other half 5, a holding space for an accessory 7 package is formed between the opposite sides of the halves 4 and 5. Thus said other half 5 forms on top of the first half 4 a cover for the holding space.
[0029] On the outer side of the half 4 of the retainer 1 an annular protrusion 8 is formed to fasten said retainer 1 to the endpiece 3 at the end of the can 2.
[0030] In the first embodiment of the annular protrusion 8 the latter is formed as a male part, i.e. the endpiece 3 at the end of the can 2 grips around the annular protrusion 8, in other words the annular protrusion 8 is inserted in the orifice or step in the endpiece 3: see Figures 2, 3, 9, 12 for the first embodiment of the retainer and Figures 17, 20, 21 and 26 for the second embodiment of the retainer.
[0031] As can be seen from the sectional views of Figures 12 and 17, where the first and second embodiment of the retainer is shown respectively and where for the sake of clarity of the drawings only can 2 with an endpiece 3 and with a retainer 1 on the endpiece 3 is shown (without a valve), the half 4 of the retainer 1 , which is fastened onto the endpiece 3 by the protrusion 8, is configured so that the protrusion 8 is gripped by the orifice in the endpiece 3.
[0032] In the second embodiment of the annular protrusion 8 the latter is formed as a female part, i.e. the annular protrusion 8 grips around the endpiece 3 at the end of the can 2, in other words the endpiece 3 of the can 2 or the step on said endpiece is inserted in the annular protrusion 8: see Figures 5, 6, 10, 13 for the first embodiment of the retainer 1 and Figures 18, 23, 24 and 27 for the second embodiment of the retainer 1.
[0033] As can be seen from sectional views on Figures 13 and 18, where the first and second embodiment of the retainer is shown respectively and where for the sake of clarity of the drawings only the can 2 with the endpiece 3 and with a retainer 1 on the endpiece 3 is shown (without a valve), the half 4 of the retainer 1 , which is fastened to the endpiece 3 by the protrusion 8, is configured so that the endpiece 3 itself grips the protrusion 8.
[0034] According to the invention the first embodiment of the retainer 1 comprises on the outer side of the half 4 an annular protrusion 8 which is symmetrical to the edges of said half 4 (Figures 2, 5, 9 and 10).
[0035] In order to fasten the other half 5 onto the first half 4, when the holding space is closed, the opposite edges to the edges of said halves 4 and 5 comprising an articulated joint 6 connecting said two halves together, includes fixing means 9 and 10 (see Figure 8). In the embodiment shown on the drawing said fixing means 9 and 10 are formed as mating parts in the form of a projection and the corresponding depression. However the fixing means can be formed also in a different way.
[0036] In order to form a closed holding space between the two halves 4 and 5, the first half 5 comprises a flange 1 1 along its perimeter. The other half 4 comprises a stepped flange 12 along its perimeter. In a position, where the halves 4 and 5 are placed one on top of the other, the flange 1 1 of the half 5 is placed on the stepped flange 12 of the half 4 so, that the holding space formed between said two halves 4 and 5 is delimited by two opposing sides of said halves 4 and 5 and by the flange 12: see Figure 8 for the first embodiment of the retainer and Figure 28 for the second embodiment of the retainer.
[0037] In the second embodiment of the retainer 1 , a suspension opening 13 is formed between the edges of the halves 4 and 5, comprising a connecting joint 6 connecting said two halves 4 and 5 together. Said suspension opening 13 is for fastening to the outside of the holding space an accessory such as a hand applicator shown on Figures 14 to 19 and 29 to 31 , when said two halves 4 and 5, are positioned one on the other and thus forming a holding space. In this embodiment the articulated joint is formed as two parts, i.e. joint 6 is not formed as an elongated part on the edges of the halves 4 and 5, but said joint comprises two shorter joints 6, wherein said suspension opening 13 is placed between them. The hand applicator 14 is an item separate from the retainer 1.
[0038] The hand applicator 14 fastened to the retainer 1 can be best seen on Figure 15. The suspension end 15 of the hand applicator 14 in the suspension opening 13 of the retainer 1 can be seen on Figure 31.
[0039] The above described embodiments are only some options from many. The invention is not linnited to the above illustrative embodiments, but for the person skilled in the art many other embodiments are apparent in the scope of the claims.
