Abstract:
A method is provided of producing acetic acid with excellent potassium permanganate test values in an industrially efficient manner and without incurring high costs. This acetic acid production method involves: a carbonylation reaction step; a separation step; a recycling step; a liquid separation step; and an acetaldehyde separation and removal step in which, on the basis of the liquid temperature at the time of liquid separation in the liquid separation step, the acetaldehyde concentration of the aqueous phase and/or the organic phase, the acetaldehyde partition ratio, the methyl acetate concentration of the aqueous phase and/or the organic phase, or the methyl acetate partition ratio, a treatment target is selected from at least part of the aqueous phase and/or the organic phase and treated. In the separation step, the crotonaldehyde concentration in a first acetic acid flow is controlled to less than or equal to 2.2 ppm by mass, and the ratio (CCR/CECR) in the first acetic acid flow of the crotonaldehyde concentration CCR (ppm by mass) and the 2-ethyl-crotonaldehyde concentration CECR (ppm by mass) is adjusted.
