Abstract:
An aerial vehicle adapted for vertical takeoff and landing using a set of wing mounted thrust producing elements and a set of tail mounted rotors for takeoff and landing. An aerial vehicle which is adapted to vertical takeoff with the rotors in a rotated, take-off attitude then transitions to a horizontal flight path, with the rotors rotated to a typical horizontal configuration. The aerial vehicle uses different configurations of its wing mounted rotors and propellers to reduce drag in all flight modes.

Claims:
What is claimed is:

1. A stowable propeller system, said stowable propeller system comprising: a central hub, said central hub comprising a first rotation axis; a plurality of propeller blades, said plurality of propeller blades pivotally attached to said central hub; and a nacelle body, said nacelle body comprising recesses in its outer surface, wherein said propeller blades are adapted to stow into said recesses in the outer surface of the nacelle body.

The stowable propeller system of claim 1 wherein said stowable propeller system further comprises a first principal axis along its center, and wherein said propeller blades are adapted to pivot from a stowed position in the recesses of the nacelle body to a deployed position to a deployed position substantially perpendicular to said first rotation axis.

3. The stowable propeller system of claim 2 further comprising a rotary positional sensor adapted to sense the rotary position of said propeller blades relative to said nacelle body.

4. The stowable propeller system of claim 2 further comprising a stowing mechanism, said stowing mechanism adapted to stow said propeller blades into said recesses in the outer surface of the nacelle body.

5. The stowable propeller system of claim 3 further comprising a stowing mechanism, said stowing mechanism adapted to stow said propeller blades into said recesses in the outer surface of the nacelle body.

6. The stowable propeller system of claim 4 further comprising a spring system adapted to deploy the propeller blades from their stowed position.

7. The stowable propeller system of claim 5 further comprising a spring system adapted to deploy the propeller blades from their stowed position.

8. The stowable propeller system of claim 1 further comprising a rotor deployment mechanism, said propeller deployment mechanism coupled to said central hub on a first end, said rotor deployment mechanism coupled to mounting points within said nacelle body on a second end.

The stowable propeller system of claim 8 wherein said nacelle body comprises a first principal axis along its center, and wherein said rotor deployment mechanism comprises one or more linkage assemblies adapted to deploy said central hub from a first position wherein said first rotation axis and said first principal axis are parallel to a second position wherein said first rotation axis and said first principal axis are substantially perpendicular.

10. The stowable propeller system of claim 6 further comprising a propeller deployment mechanism, said propeller deployment mechanism coupled to said central hub on a first end, said propeller deployment mechanism coupled to mounting points within said main rotor mounting nacelle on a second end.

The stowable propeller system of claim 10 wherein said nacelle body comprises a first principal axis along its center, and wherein said propeller deployment mechanism comprises one or more linkage assemblies adapted to deploy said central hub from a first position wherein said first rotation axis and said first principa l axis are parallel to a second position wherein said first rotation axis and said first principal axis are substantially perpendicular.

12. The stowable propeller system of claim 9 further comprising an electric motor, said electric motor coupled to said central hub with a bracket forming an outboard portion of said propeller deployment mechanism.

13. The stowable propeller system of claim 12 wherein said electric motor is rigidly attached to said central hub.

14. The stowable propeller system of claim 11 further comprising an electric motor, said electric motor coupled to said central hub with a bracket forming an outboard portion of said propeller deployment mechanism.

15. The stowable propeller system of claim 14 wherein said electric motor is rigidly attached to said central hub.

The stowable propeller system of claim 8 wherein said nacelle body comprises a first principal axis along its center, and wherein said propeller deployment mechanism comprises one or more linkage assemblies adapted to deploy said central hub from a first position wherein said first rotation axis and said first principal axis are parallel to a second position wherein said first rotation axis and said first principal axis are perpendicular, and further wherein the deployment of the central hub deploys said central hub away from said main rotor mounting nacelle body, wherein the deployment of the central hub deploys said central hub away from said first principal axis.

17. The stowable propeller system of claim 16 further comprising an electric motor, said electric motor coupled to said central hub with a bracket forming an outboard portion of said propeller deployment mechanism.

18. The stowable propeller system of claim 17 wherein said electric motor is rigidly attached to said central hub.

19. The stowable propeller system of claim 10 wherein said nacelle body comprises a first principal axis along its center, and wherein said propeller deployment mechanism comprises one or more linkage assemblies adapted to deploy said central hub from a first position wherein said first rotation axis and said first principal axis are parallel to a second position wherein said first rotation axis and said first principal axis are perpendicular, and further wherein the deployment of the central hub deploys said central hub away from said main rotor mounting nacelle body, wherein the deployment of the central hub deploys said central hub away from said first principal axis.

20. The stowable propeller system of claim 19 further comprising an electric motor, said electric motor coupled to said central hub with a bracket forming an outboard portion of said propeller deployment mechanism.

21. The stowable propeller system of claim 20 wherein said electric motor is rigidly attached to said central hub.

22. A stowable propeller system, said stowable propeller system comprising: a first propeller portion, said first propeller portion comprising: a central hub, said central hub comprising a first rotation axis; a first plurality of propeller blades, said first plurality of propeller blades pivotally attached to said central hub; a main rotor mounting nacelle, said main rotor mounting nacelle comprising: a first principal axis along the center of said main rotor mounting nacelle; a hub support coupled to said central hub; a nacelle body, said nacelle body comprising recesses in its outer surface, wherein said propeller blades are adapted to stow into said recesses in the outer surface of the nacelle body, and a second propeller portion, said second propeller portion comprising: a second plurality of propeller blades, said second plurality of propeller blades coupled to said central hub.

23. The stowable propeller system of claim 22 wherein said first plurality of propeller blades are adapted to pivot from a stowed position in the recesses of the nacelle body to a deployed position to a deployed position substantially perpendicular to said first rotation axis.

24. The stowable propeller system of claim 23 further comprising a stowing mechanism, said stowing mechanism adapted to stow said first plurality of propeller blades into said recesses in the outer surface of the nacelle body.

25. The stowable propeller system of claim 1 wherein the blades of said plurality of propeller blades are forward swept blades.

26. The stowable propeller system of claim 8 wherein the blades of said plurality of propeller blades are forward swept blades.

27. The stowable propeller system of claim 16 wherein the blades of said plura lity of propeller blades are forward swept blades.

28. The stowable propeller system of claim 22 wherein the blades of said first plurality of propeller blades are forward swept blades.

26. A method for operating a vertical take-off and landing aircraft, said method comprising the steps of: pivoting a plurality of motor driven propeller units to a vertical thrust configuration; providing power to said motor driven propeller units, thereby rotating the propellers of said motor driven propeller units; taking off the aircraft from the ground; transitioning the plurality of motor driven propeller units from a vertical thrust configuration towards a horizontal configuration, thereby gaining horizontal speed for the aircraft; and flying the aircraft in a forward flight configuration.

27. The method of claim 26 further comprising the step of discontinuing the provision of power to some or all of the plurality of motor driven propeller units.

28. The method of claim 27 further comprising the step of stowing the propeller blades of some or all of the propellers of the motor driven propeller units while flying the aircraft in a forward flight configuration.

29. The method of claim 28 wherein the step of stowing the propeller blades of some or all of the propellers comprises stowing the propeller blades into recesses on the exterior surfaces of the nacelles of the motor driven propeller units.

30. The method of claim 28 further comprising the step of re-deploying the stowed propeller blades in preparation for vertical landing.

31. The method of claim 30 further comprising providing power to the previously stowed propellers.

32. The method of claim 31 further comprising the step of transitioning the plurality of motor driven propeller units from a horizontal configuration towards a vertical thrust configuration, thereby reducing horizontal speed of the aircraft.

33. The method of claim 32 further comprising the step of vertically landing the aircraft.

34. An impact resistant propeller system, said impact resistant propeller system comprising: a propeller, said propeller having a primary spin direction along a first spin axis to provide positive thrust, said propeller comprising: a central hub, said central hub comprising a first rotation axis; a plurality of propeller blades, each of said plurality of propeller blades pivotally attached along a first pivot axis to said central hub, wherein the first pivot axis is angled such that pivoting a propeller blade backwards along said first spin axis causes the propeller blade to rotate counter to said primary spin direction.

35. The impact resistant propeller system of claim 34 wherein said first pivot axis is angled to a plane normal to the first spin axis.

36. The impact resistant propeller system of claim 35 wherein said propeller blades comprise a pivot pin, said pivot pin extending from a leading edge of said propeller blade.

37. The impact resistant propeller system of claim 36 wherein said pivot pin comprises a first end at the leading edge of said propeller blade and a second end away from said leading edge of said propeller blade, and wherein said first end is forward of said second end along said first spin axis.

38. The impact resistant propeller system of claim 37 wherein said propeller system further comprises a nacelle, and wherein said blades are adapted to pivot from a deployed

configuration substantially perpendicular to said spin axis to a stowed position along the exterior of said nacelle.

39. The impact resistant propeller system of claim 38 wherein said nacelle comprises recesses around its exterior, and wherein said blades reside in said recesses when in said stowed position.

40. The impact resistant propeller system of claim 39 further comprising a stowing mechanism, said stowing mechanism adapted to stow said propeller blades into said recesses in the outer surface of the nacelle.

41. The impact resistant system of claim 40 further comprising a spring system adapted to deploy the propeller blades from their stowed position.

42. The impact resistant propeller system of claim 41 further comprising a propeller deployment mechanism, said propeller deployment mechanism adapted to deploy said central hub from a first position wherein said first spin axis is horizontal to a second position wherein said first spin axis is vertical.

43. A quick response propeller system for an aerial vehicle, said system comprising: a central hub; a plurality of propeller blades, each of said plurality of propeller blades pivotally attached along a first pivot axis to said central hub, wherein the first pivot axis is angled such that pivoting a propeller blade backwards along said first spin axis from a position forward of normal to the spin axis causes a change in pitch of the propeller blade.

44. The quick response propeller system of claim 43 further comprising an electric motor coupled to said central hub.

45. The quick response propeller system of claim 44 wherein said first pivot axis is angled to a plane normal to the first spin axis.

46. The quick response propeller system of claim 45 wherein said propeller blades comprise a pivot pin, said pivot pin extending from a leading edge of said propeller blade.

47. The quick response propeller system of claim 46 wherein said pivot pin comprises a first end at the leading edge of said propeller blade and a second end away from said leading edge of said propeller blade, and wherein said first end is forward of said second end along said first spin axis.

48. An aerial vehicle adapted for vertical take-off and horizontal flight, said aerial vehicle comprising: a main vehicle body; a right side wing; one or more right side rotor assemblies comprising propellers, wherein one or more right side wing rotor assemblies are attached to said right side wing, and wherein said one or more right side wing rotor assemblies protrude forward of the leading edge of said right side wing along a middle section of the wing span, and wherein the propeller blades are adapted to pivot from a stowed position in the recesses of the nacelle body to a deployed position substantially perpendicular to said stowed position; and a left side wing; one or more left side rotor assemblies comprising propellers, wherein one or more left side wing rotor assemblies are attached to said left side wing, and wherein said one or more left side wing rotor assemblies protrude forward of the leading edge of said left side wing along a middle section of the wing span, and wherein said propeller blades are adapted to pivot from a stowed position in the recesses of the nacelle body to a deployed position substantially perpendicular to said stowed position; a right side wing tip rotor unit, said right side wing tip rotor unit comprising a variable pitch propeller; and a left side wing tip rotor unit, said left side wing tip rotor unit comprising a variable pitch propeller.

49. The aerial vehicle of claim 48 wherein said right side wing rotor assemblies are attached to said right wing by a deployment mechanism adapted to deploy said right side wing rotor assemblies from a forward facing horizontal flight configuration to a vertical take-off configuration, and wherein said left side wing rotor assemblies are attached to said left wing by a deployment mechanism adapted to deploy said left wing rotor assemblies from a forward facing horizontal flight configuration to a vertical take-off configuration.

[0001] BACKGROUND

[0002] Field of the Invention

[0003] This invention relates to powered flight, and more specifically to a vertical take-off and landing aircraft with pivoting rotors and stowing rotor blades.

[0004] Description of Related Art

[0005] There are generally three types of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) configurations: wing type configurations having a fuselage with rotatable wings and engines or fixed wings with vectored thrust engines for vertical and horizontal translational flight; helicopter type configuration having a fuselage with a rotor mounted above which provides lift and thrust; and ducted type configurations having a fuselage with a ducted rotor system which provides translational flight as well as vertical takeoff and landing capabilities.

[0006] The amount of thrust required to take-off in a vertical take-off scenario greatly exceeds the thrust needed to keep the same vehicle aloft during forward flight, when the wings are providing lift. The amount of thrust required to transition from a vertical take-off mode to horizontal, forward, flight mode may also be quite high. Thus, there may be a mismatch between the power requirements if there are not possibilities to change power delivery paradigms during flight.

[0007] In order to provide efficiency in both vertical take-off and forward flight modes, improvements to past systems must be made. What is called for is a vertical take-off and landing aircraft that incorporates efficiencies into all use modes.

[0009] An aerial vehicle adapted for vertical takeoff and landing using a set of wing mounted thrust producing elements and a set of tail mounted rotors for takeoff and landing. An aerial vehicle which is adapted to vertical takeoff with the rotors in a rotated, take-off attitude then transitions to a horizontal flight path, with the rotors rotated to a typical horizontal configuration. The aerial vehicle uses different configurations of its wing mounted rotors and propellers to reduce drag in all flight modes.

[0099] DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[00100] Although vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft have always been desired, compromises in the realization of these aircraft have limited their usefulness and adoption to certain niches. The thrust needed for VTOL is significantly higher than the thrust needed to maintain horizontal flight. The vertical take-off thrust may also be needed during the transition to forward flight. Once moving in forward flight, the wings of the aircraft provide lift, supplanting a function delivered by motors during VTOL and during transition. In a fully deployed position, as seen in Figure 23, and in a partial front view in Figure 28, the motor 110, motor cover 113, spinner 114, and propeller 111 have rotated to a position adapted to provide vertical thrust. The electric motor/propeller combination being on the outboard side of the articulating joint allows for a rigid mounting of the propeller to the motor, which is maintained even as the propeller is moved through various attitudes relative to the rear nacelle portion. With such a configuration the rotating power from the motor need not be gimbaled or otherwise transferred across a rotating joint.

[00110] Figures 24-27 illustrate a sequence of positions of the motor and propeller relative to the rear nacelle, also to the rear tail structure of the aerial vehicle. As the articulating portion of the rear rotor unit begins its deployment, it can be seen in Figure 25 that the linkages first deploy the articulating portion forward, as opposed to merely pivoting around a single pivot point. The multi-bar linkage allows for the use of a single actuator for this complex deployment. As the thrust direction of the rotor is vertical in the fully deployed position, the actuator powering the deployment of the multi-bar linkage is not required to offset, or counteract, the thrust of the rotor.

111] Figure 9 illustrates various positions of the wing and rear rotors as would be seen during transition from take-off to forward flight mode, or from forward flight mode to vertical take-off and landing mode. After a vertical take-off, the rotors transition from a configuration providing vertical thrust through positions rotating towards the horizontal. As the forward speed of the aerial vehicle increases, the wings begin to generate lift such that not as much vertical thrust is needed to maintain altitude. With sufficient forward speed, lift is maintained by the wings and the thrust needed for forward flight is able to be provided by fewer rotors. In some aspects, the wings are raised to a vertical take-off configuration with the use of a linkage adapted to slide the wing pivot forward as the wing reaches deployment. This allows for a more favorable compromise in center of gravity location between VTOL and forward flight modes by locating the wing- mounted rotor assemblies farther forward in the VTOL configuration. To reduce drag, the blades may be folded back into a stowed position. A deploy spring 1141 allows for the blades of the propeller to achieve a deployed configuration in the absence of centrifugal forces. The deploy spring allows for full deployment of the propeller blades even when the rotors are not turning. To achieve full stowage, the stowing tabs 1143 on the propeller blades 1 108 of the propeller 1107 are pushed on by a stowing mechanism, until the blades are fit within the recesses 1110 of the nacelle bodies.

Through the coupling of the system, as the impact causes the blade to pivot backwards relative to a more forward coned position, the coupling retards the blade along its spin direction in such a way that it moves roughly in the direction of the motion of the impacting object, thus moderating the impact upon the blade. Not only is the strain reduced, but the impact shock loading will also be reduced.

aerodynamic and inertial moments generated by the blades. By angling the blade pivot axis relative to a plane normal to the propeller rotational axis, the blade may be made to retard relative to the rotational axis as it is pushed backwards with regard to cone angle. When the blade pivot axis is angled as discussed above, the coupled system allows an impacted blade to both slow down and flap backward during the impact, dramatically reducing the impact loads on the blade, the hub, and the support structure.
