Abstract:
An apparatus enabling accurate diagnosis of osteoporosis by a simple method utilizing an X-ray panoramic photograph without requiring special skill or experience of a technician engaged in diagnosis of osteoporosis. The apparatus comprises an object area image acquiring means for enhancing the contrast of an X-ray panoramic photograph of a mandible converted into a digital image and clipping a part of the mandibular body including the mental foramen and the mandibular base as an object area image, a means for recognizing the background part and the mandibular body portion from the object area image and acquiring a part from which the background part is removed as a judgment area image, a means for sharpening the shapes of the cortical bone and the cancellous bone forming the mandibular body of the judgment area image, a means for identifying the cortical bone portion on the image where the shapes are sharpened, a means for calculating the thickness of the cortical bone from the outlines of the mental foramen and the cortical bone identified by the above means, and a means for outputting the calculated thickness of the cortical bone.
