Abstract:
The apparatus (12) for cutting film tubing (22) described herein is intended for use in a machine (10) for applying tubular labels (22a) to each of a series of containers (62) that are transported on a conveyor (64). The film tubing (22) is advanced incrementally through a ring gear (40) and a bore (38) in a platform (32) on which the ring gear (40) is rotatably mounted. A number of pinions (34) with attached cutting blades (36) are rotatably mounted to the platform (32) in positions to mesh with the ring gear (40). A planar disc (42) is mounted to a plurality of pinions (34) in a first embodiment or to the ring gear (40) in a second embodiment. One of the pinions (34) is driven to rotate a single revolution when the film tubing (22) has been advanced. The driven pinion (34) causes the additional pinions (34) to rotate through rotation of the ring gear (40).
