Abstract:
The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for automatically loading drums, which supply drums at certain respective positions and always maintain a transport container at a certain position, during the loading of drums containing radioactive waste onto the transport container, so as to reduce drum loading time and expended man hours and minimize the danger of radiation exposure during the handling of radioactive waste. To realize these objectives, the apparatus of the present invention comprises: a drum supplying unit including a plurality of conveyer modules for conveying drums holding radioactive waste, and a turntable for turning a drum conveyed on one of the conveyor modules in a direction that allows the gripping unit to grip the drum; a transport container on which drums conveyed by the drum supplying unit are sequentially loaded; a holding unit for holding a cover of the transport container during drum loading; and a crane including a gripping unit for selectively gripping and conveying the drum or transport container cover, and an elevating unit having the gripping unit mounted thereon and moving upward and downward and also being conveyed left and right along a guide rail.
