Abstract:
A container necking tool (10), and corresponding method, for necking an aluminum beverage can or container (5) is disclosed that includes a punch sleeve (32) that is longitudinally fixed in relation to a necking die (14). The sleeve (32) and die (14) form a gap (30a, 30b) therebetween, into which a pusher assembly (76) pushes the container (5) to produce the neck on a necking contour surface (20). The necking tool (10) also includes a punch body (44) and sleeve (32) to angulary distribute compressed air around the sleeve (32). Compressed air pressurizes the container (5) during necking stage, and is diverted to the gap (30a, 30b) while the can (5) is disengaged from the necking tool (10) to keep the gap (30a, 30b) clean of debris.
